Brief

The Sculpture Project has developed out of the generosity of a member of St George's Cathedral community. Funds have been made available for a public art commission of international standard which will embellish the newly restored Cathedral and Heritage Precinct in the heart of the City of Perth.

Australian and international artists are invited to share our vision of creating a dynamic public artwork of St George and the Dragon. The public art commission should enhance the entrance to the Cathedral and provide a focal point which will encourage local, national and international visitors to interact with the artwork and the environment.

The legend of St George and the Dragon is an ancient one. It stimulates images of the triumph of good over evil, the yearning for life over death, the prevailing of peace with justice over tyranny and oppression. Ultimately George and the Dragon is a symbol of hope for the future and faith in the transcendence of the human spirit over all that can demean and distort.

St George’s Cathedral has been integral to the life of Perth and home to the community who deal with these dilemmas. In the context of the unique neo-Gothic architecture, people from all over the state of Western Australia and visitors from various parts of the world come to share and ponder these questions.

St George’s is seeking an artistic representation of this struggle which will evoke the emotion of the legend and invite the community to explore these critical issues and challenges.

Artists are encouraged to push the boundaries of their imagination, to create new ideas and to challenge our preconceptions.

The project aims to involve the community in the process by inviting them to view and comment online on the artwork of their choice.

The Exhibition

An Exhibition of up to 12 selected submissions will be held in the Burt Memorial Hall in June 2009.

The artists shortlisted will be invited to create a maquette and design display for the exhibition, as well as submit details as outlined in the Selection Criteria. The exhibition will be open to the public.

The short list for display will be chosen by the selection panel and may include designs selected as the People’s Choice.

The final design chosen by the selection panel will be announced at a Gala Event to launch the exhibition.
