About St George's Cathedral

St George's Cathedral sits in one of the world's most prosperous, progressive and culturally diverse cities.

The Cathedral was consecrated in 1888 and is the second Cathedral on this site. Between 1841 and 1845 Perth's first Cathedral was built in Classical revival style. In 1875 it was decided that the community required a more prestigious place of worship. As a result the old Church was demolished when the new St George's Cathedral was built. However, some artifacts from the old building remain, including some of the jarrah pews and the eagle lectern.

The current Gothic Revival building was built of handmade redbrick in soft hues with limestone, sourced locally. Some of its most notable features include the intricate English alabaster reredos below the east window, precious stained glass, the modernistic medallions cast for the Stations of the Cross and some original Russian icons.

Today St George's Cathedral is undergoing extensive restoration and sits proudly above St Georges Terrace in the heritage heart of Perth's city.
